THE GILLARD ELECTION AND DEMOCRACY: Did we do all right?

Sep 8th, 2010 by Arnold Jago in Australia, Ethics, Politics

We talk democracy, but do we do democracy?

The Coalition parties won more seats – and more votes — than the incoming “government”.

Despite that, Australia has retained a PM of whose behaviour most Australians are ashamed and disgusted – kept there by a couple of shame-worthy “independents”.

Messrs Oakeshott and Windsor knew that those who voted them into parliament wanted them to do the opposite of what they did.

Note Mr Windsor’s give-away remark that he “would not be dictated to by the Coalition or his own constituents . . . .”

Not by his constituents? That’s handy in someone pretending to believe in democracy.

Only Mr Katter emerged with a bit of honour left intact.

What made Australians vote to bring this nauseating fate on themselves?

They indulged their two chief obsessions once too often.

Obsession1: Australians must have state-of-the-art/status-symbol toys — in this case nation-wide Broadband. It wouldn’t have hurt the Coalition to go along with them on that one . . . .

Obsession 2: Australians hate the Catholic Church (and God). They suspected that Mr Abbott has some residual Catholic moral values left in him. That was fatal.

This blog has mentioned before that it hardly matters which party forms the government.

Whichever, they are politicians — by definition primarily interested in perks and survival.

What does matter is whether the Church does its job.

Here Australia has a problem – a Church whose election-related performance merits the greatest shame of all.

The bishops remained mute (with a couple of exceptions) — thus reinforcing the myth that religion and politics don’t mix, and that the Catholic Church, on whose payroll these gents hang around, is irrelevant to real life issues.

However we must not give up.

God is in charge.

We must have deserved this government.

Let’s concentrate on being more obedient to God — and thus deserve something better next time.

Parliament House. Backstabbingsville.
