A NEW YEAR: This one might be the one

Jan 3rd, 2010 by Arnold Jago in Common Sense, Death, God

In the book “Don Quixote”, the hero tells his assistant, Sancho, about the many soldiers he had tended while they were dying.

He said he saw in all their eyes the same question.

“Was the question ‘Why am I dying?’” asked Sancho.

Quixote said, “No, it was the question, ‘Why was I living?’”

What you believe about death either gives life greater purpose — or strips it of any purpose at all.

If death leads to nothing but non-existence, all life is a meaningless mockery from start to finish.

If death is the beginning of eternal life, then life on earth is a time of opportunity, adventure, uncertainty and, hopefully, preparation.

As this New Year (2010) starts, why not set aside some time to reflect on death?

Consider the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Consider the fact that 2010 may be the year in which you yourself die.

Make an act of resignation to God’s divine will:

O Lord God, I now at this moment, readily and willingly accept at thy hand

whatever kind of death it may please you to send me,

with all its pains, penalties and sorrows.  Amen.

Pray to God that in this New Year his will will be done in your life and in the World
