AUSTRALIA DAY, JANUARY 26: Pat Cash wants it changed. Do you?

by Arnold Jago in Australia, Celebrities, History, Justice, Lifestyle, Multiculturalism

Pat Cash doesn’t want to observe Australia Day on January 26.
He’s upset about on-going poverty in many Aboriginal communities.
Yes, white people have treated Aborigines badly at times.
Mostly we’re not actively hostile — just unsure how to do better in our inter-racial relationships.
Mostly we can’t see how changing the Australia Day date would help.
Since time began, every country has experienced population inter-minglings which modified and devastated the old ways.
A land like Australia was never going to stay hunter-gatherer land.
That being so, the best we can do now is to express mutual respect and — where appropriate — mutual forgiveness.
Mr. Cash’s involvement in a charity working with aboriginal communities sounds great.
Maybe more of us should do the same, finding ways to do good things together.
One very good thing being to let bygones be bygones — and celebrate Australia Day as one.
